A novella is somewhere between a short story and a novel.
This is not to say that a novella is simply a book that missed its target length by too much or too little. It is its own distinct format, one that serves the focus and efficiency of a short story within the greater scope of a novel. An ideal vehicle for taking risks, intensive storytelling, and in-depth explorations of a character or situation, it can be difficult to pin down precisely. Many measure the novella by its word count. Few agree on exactly what that word count should be.
